opening ceremony
The successful cult fashion label Opening Ceremony exported “abstract Americana” to Hong Kong to celebrate its debut in the Chinese market — down to the food, which included American classics such as hot dogs, mini hamburgers and popcorn from vending carts.
For the debut fete, a mix of Hong Kong’s young and stylish, socialites, business types and local celebrities came out to celebrate, including Taiwanese model and actor Godfrey Gao and Hong Kong singer Kelvin Kwan.
The trendsetting duo, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, again brought their signature playful creative vibe to their new pop up shop within Lane Crawford stores in Hong Kong and Beijing with displays that pay tribute to New York street scenes.
“Hong Kong is where the story of Opening Ceremony began,” Leon explains. “It is the vibrant shopping culture of Hong Kong that inspired us to open our store on Howard Street.”
Right now there are no plans for an Opening Ceremony store in China yet, but Lane Crawford will continue to stock the merchandise after the pop-up shop closes. The Hong Kong-based department store was one of the first to buy the brand when it launched.
Opening Ceremony has stores in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
