When it comes to fashion retail, Melbourne, with its warren of tiny city laneways hiding all manner of cool boutiques, seemingly has it all over its brash northern sister, Sydney. A flick through the brand new edition of our LUXE Melbourne guide reveals that it’s not just women who are spoilt for choice however, blokes get a major look-in too. Here then, are three unique, specialist men’s wear stores featured in the guide that’ll have dandies and regular Andys standing out from the galahs.
Beggar Man Thief
This kicky shoe retailer is proof positive that women aren’t the only ones who go ga-ga for footwear. Stocking premium Clae sneakers, New Balance trainers, Brit cobblers Loake andGrenson, as well as shoes from homegrown talent like Sydney’s Andrew McDonald, there’s something for all but the most style-challenged. They don’t stop at the feet though, there’re trig sunnies and trilbies, and even tomes for bookworms. Overwhelmed by choice? Just look to the staff, they’ll be happy to help you put your best foot forward.

Lord Coconut
Taking its name from a real, if rather obscure Brit aristocrat transplanted to Mellie society in the 19th century, Lord Coconut is a showroom dedicated to men’s jewellery, cufflinks, tie pins, pocket watches and other gentlemenly accoutrements crafted by local artisans. Its interiors, with dinosaur skeleton wallpaper mural, taxidermy animals and vintage display cabinets, are a clever foil to the contemporary bounty on offer.

Captains of Industry
The Captain, housed in a city loft, is more akin to a gentlemen’s club than shop, with grooming prods, barber shop, café, plus workshops of dapper chaps James and Thom, who respectively make shoes (Roberts & Hassett) and suits to measure (Statler & Waldorf, yes, like the Muppets), all within whitewashed walls. One stop here is all you need to be perfectly groomed and dressed to impress.
